Artist in Residence: Valay Shende

Valay left Dufftown today to return to Mumbai, India. His work for this residency was meticulously crafted and fabricated with materials ranging  from copper to gold to leopard print and deer skin, to name a few. His molded whisky bottles represented the years of his different work, a la a mini retrospective but also alludes to the nature of time in the making of whisky.

And he left me with an amazing recipe for what will henceforth be known as Chicken Valay, I can't wait to cook it back in New York. Good luck with the truck Valay!

Artist in Residence: HaYoung Kim

The second artist to finish their residency today is HaYoung Kim. Hailing from South Korea she has just returned to London to finish her final year at the Royal Academy. In HaYoung's colorful paintings and drawings she uses the concept of an avatar in various figurative forms to express the idea of the multiple selves we all have in both the real and virtual worlds. And she makes great japchae!

Good luck on your dissertation!

"Stand Fast" Installed

For the final show here in Dufftown I printed and framed Stand Fast, one of my photo assemblages or pods as a large (44" x 48") print. It was a great way to work out how these pieces will look this size and in a show. Tune in to see more of these in my gallery show of this work in NYC next year. Below is the piece of text I wrote to leave in the gallery with the piece.
Combining letters makes words and strings of words communicate ideas, inspire through poetry or simply entertain. To a similar end, using the building blocks of different images in this photo assemblage allows me to share and describe the exploration of my artist residency in Scotland. The individual photographs represent both literally and lyrically the making of whisky at Glenfiddich, the landscape of the Highlands and the personal space around which I have spent my last 3 months.

Final Gallery Show at Glenfiddich

Again, if you are in the Highlands tonight stop by for art, drinks and nibbles. Don't forget to wear your wellies, bring an umbrella and maybe a scarf and gloves would feel good too.
