Tablet Rumors and Digital Magazine Concepts

I've been super excited to hear ideas and rumors (here and here) about Apple launching a touchpad, iphone-like 10" tablet in the next year. There's even a rumor about Wired being the first digital subscription magazine next summer. With the rise of blogs and shooting digitally, the backlit screen is an ideal place to view photographs. I love the idea of the digital magazine with great photography and all the other layers of information and formats that can accompany a story. I found this video about a digital magazine concept on a photo editor today. Even Martha Stewart's been talking about the tablet.

Dressing Right by Charles Hix

Following on the heels of his first book of styling tips for men, Looking Good, Charles Hix published Dressing Right in 1978. This illustrated how to guide for men looking to wardrobe themselves well includes such chapter titles as Feeling Good, Shopping Around and Formalizing Yourself. The photography is a great look at men's fashion of that time and an even better record of the different ideals of male models then compared to today. Shot by several photographers early in their career, it's awesome to see the beginnings of the signature styles we have come to recognize by two of the best fashion photographers of the last 25 years, Herb Ritts and Bruce Weber. Look for the golden retriever snuggled up next to a guy and you will suddenly see the spark in the man's eyes and glow of his cheek that is the epitome of a Weber image.

Carpet

Here is another shot from this weekend when I went on a fun hiking trip and stayed at the Mohonk Mountain House. The hotel is a Victorian lodge and has a slight resemblance to the Overlook Hotel from The Shining. The carpet has this beautiful rug-like pattern.

Binder Clip Styling

This is from a shoot I was doing downtown today. I always love the styling tricks, but this was the most binder clips I've seen used on one garment. And the front looked amazing.

White Balance on nytimes.com

For the past four years I have been working with camera raw files and I'm constantly aware of the idea of white balance and what is correct, when to correct, etc. Today there was a great example of 2 versions of the same photo on the New York Times website. The first (smaller) image was taken from the front/homepage of the times and the second (larger) image from the story.

Doster's Fashion Photography

Damiani has just published Michael Doster 80's/90's and it is a gorgeous and fun romp through his fashion photographs of big shoulder pads, bigger hair and even bigger photographic fashion fantasies from a time of excess. As he says in the accompanying interview, "Give me more, give me more of this. Make it bigger, make it huge!"

Hot Light Test

Had at shoot with Noah again this weekend (look for pics soon) and tested out some new (to me) lights. Very different from the strobes that I'm accustomed to but excited about the results of warmer more intimate lighting situations.

Robert Cameron 1911 - 2009

Robert Cameron, the photographer who created 19 books in his Above series died on November 10. I just wrote about his photo book Above Los Angeles a couple weeks ago before going there myself. I had recently stumbled across the book, but now I'm curious to see more of his work. He shot locations as varied as Paris, Mexico City, New York and natural wonders like Yosemite and Big Sur.

New York Times obituary.
