Heather Blooming at the Ring of Brodgar

The Ring of Brodgar is a neolithic henge and circle on the Mainland of Orkney. It is thought to have been erected between 2500BC and 2000BC. Presumably the heather has always been there, but these however are freshly blooming.

Everything is Everything is Everything is Everything

Susan drives her little black truck from my cottage to the still house. Getting out, she stands waving at the helicopter as I ride by shooting photographs. Tourists walk by her and she continues on with her work. She is Glenfiddich, as are the numerous Brian's and Ian's, Andy's and Peter's, all parts of a whole of a making of a world, an industry.

These are the moments in our personal histories that are a part of the greater whole of making one's way in the world by doing our work to bring supper to our tables and be a part of the human life. As everything repeats, everything becomes beautiful to each ones self by virtue of the making of ones own life on this planet. Microcosms repeat and repeat and repeat, we are all wholly one unit moving about in our independent moments that we fancifully believe to be personal. And they are! And private too, but we share them with time and each other. It is good to share. But these microcosms return to the circle that is Susan (the only Susan) waving at a helicopter as I fly by shooting photographs of everything (and the everything that is everyone) I see.

Gallery Installation

These pieces are called Distill Time Lapse (work in progress) which consists of 3 video loops on DVD and Distill (work in progress), 209 4" x 6" c-prints hung in pod like groupings.

These time lapse videos show a 24 hour period of a barley field, the whisky stills in still house #2 and two work days in the bottling department at Glenfiddich. These 3 subjects represent roughly the beginning, middle and final product in whisky making. These will be part of a larger collection of time lapse pieces shot around Glenfiddich and Duffftown.

This wall of photographs is a peek into the  editing of my images. By placing them into these organic pods of relationships based on subject matter, form or even color, I can begin to reduce them from the original shoot into the essence of what the final photographs(s) will be while at the same time creating new assembled image pieces.

P.P.E. (Personal Protection Equipment)

I have to wear my P.P.E. in certain buildings on the distillery grounds in order to gain access to the more industrial activities including the bottling and cooperage buildings. The gear includes steel toe boots, ear plugs, safety glasses and a hi viz vest.

Roe Deer

I was shooting a time lapse video outside my window and I captured this image of a roe deer, the smallest species of deer in the UK, it could not be more than 3 feet tall. It was a flat, very early morning light and I think it looks so fake, like I pasted it in. And it looks like she can see or hear the camera and is looking up directly at the lens in my window.
